  1. This is an English-language community. Comments should be in English. Posts can link to non-English news sources when providing a full-text translation in the post description. Automated translations are fine, as long as they don't overly distort the content.
  2. No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
  3. Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don't post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don't troll nor incite hatred. Don't look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia's List of fallacies.
  4. No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, islamophobia, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism. We follow German law; don't question the statehood of Israel.
  5. Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add "/s" when you're being sarcastic (and don't use it to break rule no. 3).
  6. If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
  7. Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in other communities.
  8. Don't evade bans. If we notice ban evasion, that will result in a permanent ban for all the accounts we can associate with you.
  9. No posts linking to speculative reporting about ongoing events with unclear backgrounds. Please wait at least 12 hours. (E.g., do not post breathless reporting on an ongoing terror attack.)
  10. Always provide context with posts: Don't post uncontextualized images or videos, and don't start discussions without giving some context first.

(This list may get expanded as necessary.)

Posts that link to the following sources will be removed

Unless they're the only sources, please also avoid The Sun, Daily Mail, any "thinktank" type organization, and non-Lemmy social media. Don't link to Twitter directly, instead use xcancel.com. For Reddit, use old:reddit:com

(Lists may get expanded as necessary.)

Ban lengths, etc.

We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.

If need be, there are also bans: 3 days for lighter offenses, 7 or 14 days for bigger offenses, and permanent bans for people who don't show any willingness to participate productively. If we think the ban reason is obvious, we may not specifically write to you.

If you want to protest a removal or ban, feel free to write privately to the primary mod account @EuroMod@feddit.org

A third major fire in less than a week broke out in Poland on Monday, prompting the authorities to suspect that the incidents may be linked to hybrid operations by Russian intelligence services.

The latest fire broke out in a warehouse in Siemianowice Ślaskie in southern Poland. This follows a fire in a residential building in Ząbki, near Warsaw, on 1 July, and a fire in a production hall in Mińsk Mazowiecki, around 35 km from the capital, on Sunday.

Interior Minister Tomasz Siemoniak said on Monay that in light of Russia’s hybrid tactics, the government is treating all major fires with increased scrutiny.

"Since January 2024, we have seen several attempted acts of sabotage. Every significant incident, fire, or attempted arson is being assessed as a potential act of sabotage," he said during a press conference.

The suspicion of Russian involvement intensified after a massive shopping center in Marywilska, Warsaw, burned down in May. The government later said it had evidence linking Russian intelligence to the incident. In response, Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski ordered the closure of Russia’s consulate in Kraków.

Are you polish? Are you on the border or victim of russian agression?

[–] the_wiz@feddit.org 2 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

German, spend quiet a few years in the german army and currently in reserve.

Then you should know that in war the homefront is as essential as the fighting front. Without the home front there wont be any weapons, ammo, rations, aso..

What branch were you in and what rank? As military personal you swore to protect democracy, and the freedom. We are already at war with russia and china and have been for a long time.

Plus lets be honest, russia lost its entire army in ukraine. They cant even hold that bit of land. It wont be a fight against them.

This is something i personaly see as a somewhat lame excuse... if you call for war, be ready to fight it.

What branch were you in and what rank?

Heer (so, the infantry) and Stabsunteroffizier (i think this would be equivalent to a lance seargant).

I get your point, but the other extreme (be silent if your not willing or able to pick up a gun) is also not great. Don't want to argue with you, but point out this should be about finding the right middle ground.

[–] the_wiz@feddit.org 2 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

I think the best middle ground would be if all the guys (i somehow presume its mostly guys) in the net crying for military intervention, for invoking article 5 and so on would contemplate a bit more about how awful war is... and that a conflict with an enemy like russia - how weak they may be compared to its sovjet peak - will be much different from the conflicts the west has seen in the last ~30 years (not to mention the changes in technology).

Maybe campaign for more support for ukraine, maybe campaign for better support for your countries military... but if you call for actual war and you are a fighting age male: Be ready to enlist.

If you're gonna continue promote this unpopular opinion, you could add 'and if you're not: prepare to lose your son/brother/father/male of fighting age friend. And either way: prepare for a loss in income and availability of food and other essential goods'. Best of luck.

[–] the_wiz@feddit.org 1 points 9 hours ago

Well, this all would be true if a bigger war breaks out.

Your countries are part of an empire, their possible home front is intentionally limited for these. Due to US unreliability they are changing, but it's not yet done.
