Have Dr Phil and Dr Oz ever had a fake doctor-off? It can be judged by Judge Judy and Bill Nye.

Time out, why the hate for Bill Nye? Did I miss something or is this just a joke on "people who are less qualified than their titles lead you to believe"? If so, then carry on.

On first read it sounds more like a list of shitty charlatans, of which I wouldn't really apply to Bill even if he's not as qualified as he would imply.

I would say, pleasantly, that Bill Nye suffers from one of the classic blunders of academia. Just because you're smart about one specific niche subject in one specific niche field doesn't mean you are smart about every subject in every field. Most scientists are quite honestly just as knowledgeable as the rest of us in any field that they didn't academically study. That sounds like common sense, but once you have a PhD on your name you kind of forget it.

Bill Nye is an expert mechanical engineer, and a middling to decent planetologist. Any subject beyond that and he's just as good as you or me even though he speaks with an authoritative voice.

I felt like he started in the tradition of Mr. Wizard, who himself was a teacher who didn't know the intricacies of every science, but knew how to put together a fantastic and accurate demonstration.

But I think Nye is doing talk shows and shit now, which Mr. Wizard, I don't think, would have tried to sell himself the same way. He really sold education.

it often collabs with neil degrass sometimes, or in the past.

Maybe that's just because I haven't seen anything from him super recently, so my opinion is biased with rose tinted glasses. What little Ive seen of him he seemed like an alright dude. Then again, that's easily a tailored image of himself.

A lot of people claim to have had negative interactions with him in the wild, but I haven't seen any proof yet. I've very suspicious that someone's who educates about the dangerous of climate change has this much hearsay against them. I've also heard he gets a lot of off topic questions when he does talks and gets impatient with people. He doesn't actually claim to be a scientist and if he gets questions that he didn't prepare for, he's not going to be able to give good answers.

[–] Aspharr@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

In regards to the off topic question thing; that just sounds like a fairly normal person. I feel like anyone could get annoyed by being asked constantly about non-relevant stuff. Sure, some folks are very good at handling those things with grace and should be applauded for it, but I feel like that's a noteworthy exception and not how most folks would react depending on the severity of course.

Just a joke about him being "only an engineer". He's definitely not on the same level of Oz and Phil.

Phil McGraw is downright, possibly a toxic man to be taking any advice from. There have been longstanding allegations that drugs (maybe alcohol too) have been given to guest on his talk show before taping, while those on medications allegedly have had them withheld before taping. That is on top of the typical toxic workplace behavior that has been reported with similar type of environments.
