And that is the whole issue here in a nutshell. Doctors and nurses are putting their careers and freedom on the line just brushing up against these draconian laws. If I were in their shoes I too would be very skittish.
I'm neither a doctor nor a woman, but can they really draw a line saying this day is in the sixth week and tomorrow is in the seventh? A line that would hold up in court if it had to?
If it's a matter of days you could probably just lie about the timing of your last period. Those weeks are calculated from the date of your last period, not from the date of conception, so as long as you're the only one who knows your cycle you could probably lie a little bit.
Which also makes a 5 week deadline more insane than most people realize. Given a steady 4 week cycle, you have 1 week to realize your period is late, schedule and perform an abortion. A lot of people do not have a steady cycle, and those may very well not notice until it's too late, even if they track their cycle.
Cruelty by design.
The people who are setting the rules are VERY aware of ALL of that.
And is there any medical proof that can stand up to brainworm addled pseudoscience in court ? Would you bet your career and your freedom on that?
American doctors should go on strike.
As I understand it, they are, in away. Many are moving to less draconian states where they can still practice evidence based medicine, or even to other countries.
