Trump is intending to turn the tariffs into a sales tax to replace the income tax. This place a monumental amount of the tax load on poor and middle class Americans. The tariffs do not show up on your receipts or your tax return, but it is a huge economic burden nonetheless. If the republicans manage to make a case for getting rid of the income tax, it will be very difficult to reestablish it.

We cannot allow republicans to control the narrative on this. We need to stop talking about tariffs and taxes like they're two separate things. TARIFFS = TAXES. Repeat this over and over again on all media platforms.

https://ballotpedia.org/Laws_governing_recall

Let me preface this by saying I'm not a lawyer and am more interested in discussion on this topic than specifically championing it.

Recall elections are supported (at some level) in 39 states. Of those, only 12 require some subjective grounds for removal; usually malfeasance, corruption, incompetence, etc...

Given the current state of the country, you could reasonably petition for the recall of any official supporting/enabling the dismantling of the constitution by the federal government.

Before anyone points it out: yes, the laws on the books generally apply to state and local offices. I'd view anything that roots out MAGAs or DINOs as a win. These are the people that run your federal elections and order local police to support ICE abductions.

However, it's also not clear if these state laws would extend to recalling members of congress. The general sentiment is they would not because no recall mechanism exists in the constitution. Still, that specific issue has never been brought to court.

The closest we've come is U.S. Term Limits, Inc. v. Thornton. The result was a 5-4 ruling that states cannot impose restrictions on the election of prospective members of congress. This isn't the exact same as a for-cause recall of a member of congress, but it isn't encouraging precident.

But let's examine a few key things:

  1. Our current SCOTUS doesn't give a flying fuck about precident
  2. Trump is becoming combative with the judiciary. Allowing federal recalls is an insulated way to erode the administration's support without directly overruling any authority.
  3. Our very own Clarence Thomas' dissent in the above case!

Nothing in the Constitution deprives the people of each State of the power to prescribe eligibility requirements for the candidates who seek to represent them in Congress. The Constitution is simply silent on this question. And where the Constitution is silent, it raises no bar to action by the States or the people.

With those facts and that phrasing, I could certainly see a scenario where the recall of (at least) a few US congress members could happen. Of course the specific state laws vary and the political positioning needed to make it happen is beyond my current understanding.

Could it work?

Is this movement just about being anti-Trump (an important sentiment)? Or are we standing up for the big picture of what allowed someone like Trump and an ideology like magaism to come to such power?

Some of us are beginning to feel crowded by neoliberal ideals that are worrying. If we don't address genocide and the industrial military complex in our discussions, and don't have a real look at the direct connection between magaism and nazism, then this is a doomed movement.

Trump is terrible and all he cares about it his and his friends land and real estate. Being anti-Trump is good. But if that's where it ends, we're missing the full problem.

Well all, I don't know if tRump is just learning about the town halls now. But it is definitely getting to him. Probably since his approval ratings are sliding into negative territory all across the board.

The cracks are already beginning to form more and more. They're getting scared.

We have to keep it up: https://youtube.com/shorts/5TI2IpXXzZY

We're witnessing united fronts from political groups, as well as universities and law firms, against Trump. My question is: why aren't we seeing a more unified stance from the arts and humanities community? Or am I just not seeing it? It seems to me that individuals in these fields would be among the first to come together in some kind of alliance. What do you think?

Since it seems that Walmart and other mega corporations support Trump, why don't you have a day where you boycott one business. Like on x day nobody goes to Walmart or whatever. People can do it with no effort, so many more could join in. Let these companies see how they rely on PEOPLE for success. Just a thought

It's working, guys. Americans are soundly rebuking Trump's handling of...well just about everything.

If you need a little motivation, you have to watch these 2 recent videos from Maddow:

Trump's second term already falling apart less than 100 days in, polls show

And this one, about how the mass public resistance is successfully forcing him to reverse a bunch of major decisions, including: Reversing cancelations of thousands of student visas. Reversing the firing of FDA food safety workers. Walking back RFK's "autism registry" where he wanted to track a bunch of private medical data for a population he has zero understanding of. Restoring the Crime Victims Hotline. Resuming non-English translations for the National Weather Service. Restoring funding for the most successful long-running study of women's health in history.

Protests broke out immediately over the WI judge arrested for "obstructing" an ICE arrest and she was quickly released, prompting the governor to officially limit cooperation with ICE from state employees. Trump is drowning in lawsuits over small businesses and state economies hurt by tariffs. Lawsuits from schools and research institutes over funding cuts. SCOTUS is not greenlighting his witch-hunts, and his DOJ is not going to avoid a contempt charge over the Abrego Garcia case.

100 days in, and he's absolutely lost the public. An increasingly united refusal to comply from every level of government and civil society will absolutely be the end of his wannabe-dictator reign. In fact, it appears to work much better than capitulating in fear, and a new ad campaign is resolved to make that clear.

Do not break stride. Keep showing up. Keep refusing to accept any of his blatantly corrupt actions as legitimate. Keep demanding the attention of the media, lawmakers, and the public. It's working, the tides are turning, because we've kept showing up, speaking out, and refusing to give in.

We're witnessing the last tantrums of a doomspiraling administration. The delayed effects of this tariff war will become visible on the shelves within the next 2-3weeks, and the trucking industry is going to take a hit with the 30% drop in cargo too. It'll suck but it will also make it impossible for Republicans in Congress to keep defending him...

Impeachment is imminent.

Let nothing slow this movement down, flow around the twists and turns like water and keep moving forward. Trump's regime is too incompetent and reckless to hold itself together in the face of united resistance.

Get your cash. Refrain from making any purchases.

If children and those who interpret the law, who are arguably the most protected individuals, are not safe, then the most prudent course of action is to opt out of all activities. Opt out of all cash transactions.

SCOTUS has agreed to hold hearings regarding Trump v. Casa, which, if ruled in Trump’s favor, would limit birthright citizenship to those with at least one parent who is a citizen or green card holder. It would also set precedent that Trump could amend certain parts of law using EOs.

This is one of the biggest court rulings I’ve ever seen, and one we should pay attention to closely. This would be Amendment XXVIII if this goes Trump’s way. If it doesn’t, though, that would be huge for democracy.

60 minutes will be talking to the director of NIH about the upcoming cuts to NIH. The current admin. cut funding completely for my daughter's disorder (Neurofibromatosis).

We used to get 15 million to 25 million, now NOTHING. Cancer, brain tumors, vaccines, dementia and on and on are said to be cut.

If you cannot watch it tonight, it will be on YouTube in a couple of days.

Thank you.

Level 4 - Super Hard - But Absolutely Necessary

It will take courage, but we must protect our neighbors. Things will only get worse if we go not stop it now.

For those who have while privilege, weaponize it.

  • If you see someone getting arrested by ICE and you are alone:

    • Videotape it - it will protect you and document the truth.
      • Even better if you livestream it or it automatically gets uploaded to the cloud so it can't be deleted without your permission.
    • Ask the officer:
      • Their name
      • Their badge number
      • For a warrant
      • (They are legally required to identify themselves)
    • Ask detainees
      • Their name with spelling
      • Their date of birth
      • A phone number for a person to contact.
    • Narrate the date, time, and location.
    • Help translate a warrant if required. You can use online translation tools.
    • Get the vehicle and license plate number on camera.
  • If there are people around:

    • Yell for them to help. Sometimes people just need to be spurred into action.
    • One person can get the information from the officer and one from the detainee(s). More people can record from different angles.

Either way, if the officer is in plainclothes and does not provide sufficient evidence that they are ICE or other law enforcement agent, it could 100% be a kidnapping. You can scream that someone is being abducted and call 911 if your are in a state or city that will not cooperate with ICE.

  • It is legal to shout or use a bullhorn to warn others. This is covered under the first amendment. Just make sure not to use "fighting words".
    • Even though it is legal, it is risky. Do not aim your warning towards a single person. Better just to announce the presence of the officer.
  • Write down phrases in different languages.
    • For example, la migra is term for immigration enforcement and border patrol officials in Spanish.

Level 2 - Medium

  • Join the ACLU as a volunteer.

    • They have opportunities to call and text for different civil rights violations. Recently, there have opportunities have been related to the violation of immigrant rights.
  • Volunteer for the United We Dream MigraWatch Hotline

    • Volunteers are need to answer answer calls and provide guidance for people calling the hotline.
  • Start a list of local pro-bono immigration lawyers that are willing and ready to provide services for people being detained.

Level 1.5 - Not as Easy

Level 1 - Easy

Level 0.5 - Super Easy

  • Get the word out: Tell your friends, share on social media.

He's openly defying the Supreme Court and thus the constitution. I suggest we have a planned day of protest, and also plan a really big one at the capital. This would need to be well planned to get the most impact. We need to target Republican congresspeople, they are allowing Trump's lawlessness. The republicans held Nixon accountable for much less than trump's done.

Hey, y’all. I’ve been working a lot to try and stay more informed but it has been getting increasingly difficult to find any reliable information. I’ve been using sources from here and their links, scrolling through and reading various news articles, along with fact checking social media posts that I see (such as reading proposed/passed bills, reading news coverage, etc).

But even with that I realised just how little I knew when I was at 4/19 and how little I could find aside from local coverage and such (which is even more difficult to do considering I’m from a small middle of nowhere town). I’m aware that I can’t know everything at anytime all at once since it’s just one thing after the other, but even with topics I felt like I was more informed on, such as trans rights, I just didn’t know a lot.

I feel like I need to know more and know more about what I can do since I won’t be able to attended May 1st since I will be in school (I’m 17) and they’ve already gotten upset with me and threatened legal action against me over missing a couple classes along with testing starting. I just want to know how I can learn more and be more informed, especially since I’ve started deleting a lot of my social media.

And on a side note, I don’t know how to properly mange how much I should be informing myself/managing the information I learn since I often end up doing so and leading myself to spiralling and such.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.
