This pier used to extend over a kilometer from the shore, to reach deep water vessels to allow for the transport of sugarcane.

Now however, it reaches a "mere" 800 meters

This led me on a rabbit hole. Apparently the longest pier in the world is 8km, the Progreso Pier in Mexico. And it's still in use for both cargo and passengers.
