If I'm on a feed, say All, then I accidentally open the communities side bar, I cannot for the life of me work out how to close it without having to choose a feed or community, triggering a refresh.

This is worse when I'm on a post. I am here reading the comments in a post and accidentally open the communities side menu, how do I close it and stay on the post? I have almost no chance of finding that same post again 🙁

This is one of my major annoyances with the app. The communities sidebar will often seemingly open itself whilst I am scrolling on /all and then there is no way to return to where you were.

I have all gestures switched off that I can find so I don't even know why it suddenly decides to open itself when my thumbs are no where near the navigation bar at the bottom either.

This happens to me everyday!

As far as I have worked out there is no way to return to where you were before.

Happens to me all the time.

Randomly? Or after you do a specific thing? If you could take a video and let me know device specs that would be very helpful!

In my case it's not the glitch I've heard users mention where it opens randomly. Personally I just swipe to communities or open it accidentally and then can't resume scrolling where I left off. It's an inconvenience.

Been happening to me for over two years. I use Voyager because it can filter my home feed from my all feed, but I also use Jerboa and Blorp, but I haven't found any filter like Voyagers, buut, neither Jerboa or Blorp are subject to the back button taking you right out of your place in the feed, they display the communities different so that doesn't happen.

[–] moseschrute@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Blorp dev here. I didn’t want to over complicate filter config, but I also don’t want to limit users. I could think about expanding it.

[–] lemmie689@lemmy.sdf.org 2 points 1 day ago

Hi, thanks for responding! It's just really handy to not see things Im already subscrbied to in my All feed. I read my Home feed, and then switch to All when Im done. I like Blorp, I use it for my alt account, which I made just a few months ago when sdf was down for a bit.

Its like, with all the blocks and subscriptions I have, a lot of my all feed is already in my home feed, so I don't need to see it all again.

Piefed has keyword filters built in server-side

The thing is, when reading a post you do not just accidentally open the communities menu. In the beginning I thought too I tapped the back button twice, but after more than a year using Voyager daily, I can say it just happens from time to time. It is really frustrating. This is not the first bug report regarding this issue and I guess the Dev has it on his list, but it seems hard to fix, idk

If you could close the menu as easily as it opened then having it randomly open sometimes wouldn't be such a big deal.

Most annoying feature in voyager. I think it would be fixed if the back button would not switch from your feed to the feed overview

[–] localhost001@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

In Apollo, you could just swipe from the right side of the screen to go back to where you were (this also works between a Post and the feed as well). It was a great feature I used every day. It doesn’t seem to work on Voyager though. Definitely miss that feature.

Strange, we have 4 peoples for whom it’s happening way too often, meanwhile I barely even see the communities sidebar and I really have to look for it.

I’m also unable to open this sidebar when I’m on a post.

I’m on iPhone, if that helps. Are you all 4 on android and this could be some sort of different gesture between the two OS?

Or, kinda dumb hypothesis, are you all left handed? The communities button is on the top left so maybe scrolling with your left hand makes it more prone to touch that button?

[–] Dave@lemmy.nz 2 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Not left handed but yes I'm on Android, maybe it's an Android specific bug. I had previously assumed a skill issue but maybe there's actually a bug here.

Regardless, even just accidentally opening the side menu when I've scrolled way down the feed is annoying as you can't get back to where you were. You can do that with a swipe in the wrong direction, even if all gestures are disabled.

[–] aeharding@vger.social 2 points 23 hours ago (3 children)

I’ve heard of the double back bug (from a post it goes back to the communities list in one swipe) but I’ve never been able replicate it myself.

It anyone has good replication steps please lmk!

[–] Dave@lemmy.nz 2 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

If the community side bar could be opened and closed without it refreshing the feed (overlaid instead of a screen change), then the bug would be less of an issue because the impact would be greatly reduced.

[–] aeharding@vger.social 2 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

If the app thinks the app button is being pressed twice, then the app would just close instead of going to the communities list, so that wouldn't solve the problem. I need to get the the root of the problem with a reproduction in order to fix it.

[–] Dave@lemmy.nz 1 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

Maybe, but I think many people would like the ability to do this regardless of the bug 😅.

[–] juja@lemmy.world 2 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

Me too. I’ve personally never faced the bug you’ve mentioned myself but I do sometimes accidentally end up opening the communities sidebar and end up losing my place in the feed because I can’t just dismiss the sidebar. I have to select something and that will end up refreshing my feed. If we could just have a close button on the sidebar that would help immensely.

[–] aeharding@vger.social 1 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

What if there was a setting that would make a toast message come up “swipe again to close feed”?

It would only activate/apply if the thing to swipe to is the communities list.

I’d have to do some testing but that wouldn’t be that hard to implement.

[–] juja@lemmy.world 1 points 16 hours ago

Not sure I fully understand. Did you mean swipe again to close feed or sidebar ? Just to be clear, what I’m looking for is a way to NOT close/refresh feed but to just dismiss the sidebar.

I also didn’t fully understand the proposed solution. Are you saying that there already exists a way to do it now and all that is required is to show a toast to educate users on how to do it ? If so, I’d be happy to try that solution and see if works and if it does, showing a toast would certainly help. Or are you saying the default behaviour needs to be changed and the toast is just a bonus to let users know about the change ?

[–] MeThisGuy@feddit.nl 1 points 17 hours ago

I have that happen sometimes when I hit the back button whilst looking at a picture fullscreen.
other times just randomly..

any way to add an option to save your reading place in the feed by default and just a pull down to refresh?

really sucks sometimes when you're a few ~~hrs~~ mins scrolling deep only to have it start from the top.

[–] gigachad@sh.itjust.works 1 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

It definitely happens random or after a certain amount of time. Are there any logs produced that could help identifying the probkem?

[–] aeharding@vger.social 1 points 21 hours ago

No logs for something like this.

[–] 18107@aussie.zone 2 points 1 day ago

I just installed voyager on a new phone (Android /e/OS). I tapped the app switcher button in the bottom right corner. The menu opened as the app switched. I have not been able to repeat this.
