News and information from Europe πŸ‡ͺπŸ‡Ί

(Current banner: La Mancha, Spain. Feel free to post submissions for banner images.)

Rules (2024-08-30)

  1. This is an English-language community. Comments should be in English. Posts can link to non-English news sources when providing a full-text translation in the post description. Automated translations are fine, as long as they don't overly distort the content.
  2. No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
  3. Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don't post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don't troll nor incite hatred. Don't look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia's List of fallacies.
  4. No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, islamophobia, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism. We follow German law; don't question the statehood of Israel.
  5. Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add "/s" when you're being sarcastic (and don't use it to break rule no. 3).
  6. If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
  7. Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in other communities.
  8. Don't evade bans. If we notice ban evasion, that will result in a permanent ban for all the accounts we can associate with you.
  9. No posts linking to speculative reporting about ongoing events with unclear backgrounds. Please wait at least 12 hours. (E.g., do not post breathless reporting on an ongoing terror attack.)
  10. Always provide context with posts: Don't post uncontextualized images or videos, and don't start discussions without giving some context first.

(This list may get expanded as necessary.)

Posts that link to the following sources will be removed

Unless they're the only sources, please also avoid The Sun, Daily Mail, any "thinktank" type organization, and non-Lemmy social media. Don't link to Twitter directly, instead use xcancel.com. For Reddit, use old:reddit:com

(Lists may get expanded as necessary.)

Ban lengths, etc.

We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.

If need be, there are also bans: 3 days for lighter offenses, 7 or 14 days for bigger offenses, and permanent bans for people who don't show any willingness to participate productively. If we think the ban reason is obvious, we may not specifically write to you.

If you want to protest a removal or ban, feel free to write privately to the primary mod account @EuroMod@feddit.org

Yes, take them! Do it! Just rapture them up. Give them guns while you're at it. It's going to be great.

[–] DmMacniel@feddit.org 2 points 2 weeks ago (4 children)

But... Wouldn't that make those migrants?!

[–] Dojan@pawb.social 1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

No. White people are expats. /s

I hate the term expat.

[–] Kornblumenratte@feddit.org 1 points 2 weeks ago

There's an important difference, though. Most migrants aim to blend in and integrate, expats by definition don't.

[–] NoneOfUrBusiness@fedia.io 1 points 2 weeks ago

The only moral migration is my migration.

[–] omgboom@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 2 weeks ago

Umm no migrants are brown silly

[–] saltesc@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

It's America. Everyone's an immigrant unless they're from Europe. Even the indigenous are from India.

[–] CyberEgg@discuss.tchncs.de 0 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

unless they're from Europe.

Not even that. Ask the Irish and Italians.

[–] Ooops@feddit.org 1 points 2 weeks ago

I did not have "Trump could present an idea universally liked by people in Europe" on my bingo card.

[–] disgrunty@slrpnk.net 1 points 1 week ago

Can you offer it to the Brits too, please? You'll mostly empty the country but I'm sure we'll be all the better for it.

[–] xxce2AAb@feddit.dk 1 points 2 weeks ago

Oh no. How terrible. I'm sure they'll be dearly missed.

So, what's everyone having for lunch?

[–] trollercoaster@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

I know that history doesn't repeat by 100%, but Nazis (other than top notch scientists) fleeing to North America definitely wasn't on my bingo card.

[–] Melchior@feddit.org 1 points 2 weeks ago

That already happened with white South Africans....

[–] sirico@feddit.uk 1 points 2 weeks ago

Go on Nige one step closer to true love

[–] PracticalFail@feddit.org 1 points 2 weeks ago

"I don't like migrants, good thing US gave me refugee status so I can migrate to the US" - lol

[–] Hotznplotzn@lemmy.sdf.org 1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Maybe it's just me, but I find it increasingly difficult to spot the difference between satire and real news :-)

[–] Kornblumenratte@feddit.org 1 points 2 weeks ago

Somehow some satirists were cursed with the power to create by writing. Someone should tell them!

[–] whaleross@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago

I support this and have their EU passports shredded when they leave.

[–] CyberEgg@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 2 weeks ago

Can we, like, advertise that? Like, here in Europe? Like, big ads? Can Trump offer some, idk, rewards or starting help?

[–] RageAgainstTheRich@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Not a bad idea actually! Lets swap people. We give america the racists, fascists and nazis. You give us the left wing people. Then america can close its borders fully and stop interacting with the rest of the world. Nice and quiet.

[–] trollercoaster@sh.itjust.works 0 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Careful what you wish for. Most American "Leftists" would barely pass as centre right, even in the current political landscape in most European countries.

[–] Skua@kbin.earth 1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Frankly I would be happy to take centre right over some of the people pushing the anti-migration stuff here

[–] AZX3RIC@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

I'm all for public health care, people making their own decisions about themselves without my involvement, public transportation, treating people decently, and the EU forcing apple to adopt USB-C.

Anyone want to sponsor?

[–] Zwuzelmaus@feddit.org 1 points 2 weeks ago

No, no. You are getting him wrong.

Mr Trump warned European nations [...] because of unchecked immigration.

Europe is in serious trouble. β€œThey’ve been invaded by a force of illegal aliens like nobody’s ever seen before.

Don't forget that he is a visionary. He is talking about the future. Europe's future, in a time when it's going to be illegal for Us Americans to enter Europe (especially soldiers).

Please take all our Reform brainlets

[–] tal@lemmy.today 1 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

all

Note that according to current polls, over 30% of the UK's population intends to vote Reform in the next election.

It's a hell of a lot.

[–] LordOfLocksley@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

Think of all the housing freed up for the younger generations

[–] skepller@lemmy.world 0 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Being a foreigner in the US sounds like a great deal right now! lmao

[–] trollercoaster@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

Don't worry, they became a fair bit more tolerant towards Nazi immigrants than they used to be in the past. Last time, a Nazi would have to perform some kind of rocket science to get accepted into the US, now all it takes is "opposing migration". Any idiot with half a brain cell can do that.

[–] LifeInMultipleChoice@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I seem to remember 10s of thousands of Nazis gathering in Madison Square Garden. They weren't all rocket scientists, most of them were getting swindled by a grifter. The leader(s) at the time I believe got charged with fraud and their movement started to sizzle out.

Yes, back then, fascism was en vogue pretty much all over the place, it only became a fair bit less popular when some of the states where the fascists actually got into power started waging war on everyone and their cat.
