Chemistry prize makes me nervous.

It should. It is in the midst of an intentional starvation campaign where they restrict the calories allowed into Gaza. They are trying to figure out how far they can take it. Like giving nazis a prize for figuring out what gas will kill jews the least painfully.
[Edit: was not aware of the "Ig" Nobel Prizes. It is supposedly a sort of satire; like the Darwin Awards. Still disgusting that the US and Israel are doing that]
It's satirical, but not like Darwin Awards. Though there have been a few awards that was definitely criticism, their stated goal is to "honor achievements that first make people laugh, and then make them think."
I certainly did not laugh at us/israals "achievement"
I hadn't even seen who the winners of that one were... Yikes
Yeah, eating PTFE seems like a bad idea
Okay, I can see ragging on the dudes eating Teflon, but don’t hassle the Italian Pasta Physicists. Those fuckers are on to something.
35th First Annual Ig Nobel Prize
What? You can't have 35 "First" annual events
Not sure if you’re familiar or not with the Ig Nobel Prize (the “ig”is important - it’s not the same as the Nobel Prize), but it’s a kind of parody-but-not of the Nobel prize. It typically covers off-beat or weird science, to “honor achievements that first make people laugh, and then make them think.”
It’s about as quirky as the science it covers:
Miss Sweetie Poo, a little girl who repeatedly cries out, "Please stop: I'm bored", in a high-pitched voice if speakers go on too long
Throwing paper planes onto the stage is a long-standing tradition. For many years Professor Roy J. Glauber swept the stage clean of the airplanes as the official "Keeper of the Broom". Glauber could not attend the 2005 awards because he was traveling to Stockholm to claim a genuine Nobel Prize in Physics.
Calling each subsequent event the “first” is definitely on brand!
The reality is science prizes are nothing but popularity contests mixed with politics.
Sure, I would guess that the same goes for just about any contest that can’t be objectively measured.
At least they’re trying to do fun, interesting, and useful. 🙂
I'm kinda disappointed by the shoes racks experiment. Like they put a UV light in an enclosed shoes rack to remove odor and that's it.
Of course it degrade the shoes, at 4 minutes it start to create the smell of burnt rubber...
More research is necessary
"I could eat a whole pan." taken too seriously.
The study that won the nutrition prize was clearly just an excuse to go on a protracted vacation to a "seaside resort in Togo."
OK, the teflon one is monstrous and should get its perpetrators perpetually banned from any position of responsibility, and the drunk bat one depends on whether they force fed the poor critters alcohol or they just ate fermented fruit by themselves, but the rest look like perfectly cromulent science, especially the pasta sauce one... that's important research, and should get government funding.
This is wonderful! I'll have to look back through the last 35 years
Who parsed the text in the description? There are several mistakes that totally change the meaning of these. Bats impacted by pigeons and not alcohol, no mention of pasta sauce etc...
Goddammit claude lol
I spent a long time pinching and squinting to read the text on the image, only to find it transcribed, with links - in the post body...
There's lots of mistakes in the transcription dw
I dont understand why you use Claude. Isn't the whole text available in the link you posted? Why not copy paste the text from there?
Also, you can zoom in, it's a decent resolution.
My Spanish speaking friends have always said that my Spanish gets much better when I'm a bit more than tipsy. Finally somebody confirms this.
There are many free and libre OCR programs, that have way more accuracy than an "AI"
I would unironically rather win an Ig Nobel prize than a Nobel prize. Granted, it's easy to say this as I'm exceedingly unlikely to win either, but a girl can dream.
Brb, painting cow.
When you're done, come watch my fingernails grow under this electron microscope!
The links on the aviation prize don't work.
Try going through the Ig website as linked. It's the first link.
The link there doesn't work either. And the title seems to have changed since you copied from there.
Seems to be this paper: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0376635710000446
I tried to comment it here a while ago, but .world was temporarily out or work.
Thanks, I'll double check once I'm near a PC. Annoying! ┐('~`;)┌
Maybe the Ignobel publishers are trying to get their prize next year... It's an interesting experiment on time-dependent literature.
