Lindsey Halligan, the White House official leading a review of the Smithsonian Institution, said you "can't really talk about slavery honestly unless you talk about hope and progress" during a Newsmax appearance on Wednesday.

"Slavery wasn't all bad."

-The people that benefited from slavery.

You should see the CNN segment where a white lady argued with the black host that slavery wasn't a white thing. CNN, not Fox.

Slavery wasn't a white thing. Slavery was an everyone thing. At some point in time pretty much every culture and skin color participated in and benefited from slavery. Reducing slavery to only white owners and black slaves is incredibly incorrect, and teaching slavery like that is absolutely going to brainwash our kids.

But the big caviat here is that the discussion was specifically about slavery in the United States of America. In the US. It was almost exclusively white people that owned slaves.

It's not about blaming everything bad on white people. It's about remembering OUR history, and the history of THIS country, is built on racism and white supremacy and we should teach our kids that.

She is intentionaly arguing in bad faith to lie and misinformation people.

[–] avidamoeba@lemmy.ca 10 points 1 day ago

Exactly. In the context it was discussed, it was a white thing.

CNN got bought out by conservative knuckledraggers

Hey, Americans. You’re all complicit as long as these people feel safe leaving their homes every day.

By all means, though- don’t do anything. Just, you know, post a sad little defensive reply to make yourselves feel better.

[–] MiddleAgesModem@lemmy.world 12 points 1 day ago (1 children)

No, I'm not complicit because I'm not a barely discriminate murderer.

[–] III@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago

How can we make them feel unsafe?

[–] GladiusB@lemmy.world 4 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

Sure. Let me rot in jail to take of the one person that represents all the assholes that will still be alive and share his beliefs. That checks out.

It sucks, but this pain teaches the future generations how god-damned crazy they sound. It's not an overnight fix. It's going to take decades.

It would in fact be better if a foreign country took care of it.

Utter cowardice.

“We’re going to spend three or four decades being belligerent shitheads to the rest of the world when they tell us exactly what is going to happen, and when they’re proven right we’re going to depend on them to save us from ourselves. Meanwhile, we’re going to keep congratulating ourselves for our revolutionary, victory-against-great-odds heritage.”

On brand for Americans.

[–] GladiusB@lemmy.world 5 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

I never said anything about my heritage. Or justifying idiotic racists. I live in one place. I raise a kid. I can't just drop everything and go on a tirade to save everyone. Neither can anyone else. Saying it's "cowardice" shows how disconnected you are from reality. Not everyone has the means to make change other than being a good example and showing other they are being dick heads when they are being dick heads.

[–] WizardofFrobozz@lemmy.ca -3 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

Right. Because nobody who ever fought fascism and tyranny ever had jobs, families, dreams, or anything to lose. Your national heroes were all just Disney characters who never had to risk anything because their victory was guaranteed and there were, of course, no potential consequences for getting it wrong.

[–] GladiusB@lemmy.world 2 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

You seem to be a bit mentally unhinged. If you have the energy, go fight the fight. I tried in my younger years and can't keep up the fight. It's up to the newer generation.

My country’s fine for now, thanks. Go sit on the sofa and rest. You’ve done enough, clearly- pat yourself on the back and just be as complacent as you can be.

[–] GladiusB@lemmy.world 1 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

Thanks! I think I have too.

Never has a comment sounded so painfully white. You represent “the opposition” perfectly. I’ll hold onto this comment.

I think slaves have it hard enough already without feeling unsafe to leave their homes
