But there's less evidence of wrongdoing at the moment by orders of magnitude than WhatsApp, etc.
I do appreciate the conversation, but holy hell the same connect-the-dots is never made about WhatsApp. Makes me wonder who's pushing these stories.

That's not what this piece is about though. It's not a comparison, it's specifically about telegram. Their CFO has a contract with the FSB, do with that what you will. Durov has also said that he's never been back to Russia since, that's been proven false, he's been back more than 50 times.

Fwiw I don't use WhatsApp either, I use SimpleX with Signal as a backup.
The answer should be use signal that has been configured in a hardened way. Everything else can't be trusted. Hell even with signal if it's really sensitive Encode with pgp using their public key then send through signal then they decode using their private key.

I don't do these purity tests. Simplex has better architecture over signal. So as long as that holds true, I will be moving my crew over there once apps are polished
Anything architected by fascists and their supporters is suspect. Maybe it looks good now but, such an individual would be more likely to quietly push malicious changes in the future.

There's a difference between your run of the mill corpo and a fascist. Not a huge one but, it is important.
From a purist perspective sure
From practical perspective, they are the same picture.
That investigation was conducted by russian journalists in exile. It was specifically about telegram because they have sources and it is the most relevant messenger for their readers (including people inside russia who largely assume that telegram is safe). No conspiracy here.
This is the normal level of quality you can expect from Newsweek, unfortunately.
