I'm 97% sure there is suppose to be a diamond style steel plate here covering the top.

In the UK we've seen grates/covers etc... stolen for scrap; our local council have decided to just replace them with wood it seems, as whenever new ones go down, they're missing within a few weeks. The wood is unsightly, but it doesn't go missing.

wouldn't surprise me if the same has happened here.

Oh man, if only there was a commercially available grate solution for this exact type of location.

I'd wager that they next time they do maintenance to the road or sidewalk that spot gets fixed. So 10-30 years out, probably.

1349 W Mann Rd, Laredo, TX 78041

It's been like that since at least 2007, looks like we'll know for sure if it's going to get fixed in just another 12 years.

There's an underground drainage structure less than 100' away that this swale is connected to. They could have put a gutter inlet in the road and run a pipe instead. How incredibly lazy and cheap...

Slavery.

Worth noting it was abolished in Mexico at the time.

What are we looking at? The gutter?

[–] hperrin@lemmy.ca 20 points 1 month ago (3 children)

Basically the sidewalk is only usable if you have two sturdy working legs. If you use a walker, cane, or wheelchair, youshallnotpass.gif

I could get across it on my cane, but I know way more people that need one that couldn't

Which is my way of backing up what you said, with clarification that not everyone on a cane is exactly the same, what with some people looking at canes as less serious of a medical device than walkers. I mean, I guess that's true to a minor extent, but there's a ton of overlap where a person could use either one equally well.
