I think they were trying to make it look like the stereo equipment of the day.

The 70s were big on wood paneling in general.

Dude don't remind me. When I saw those I always thought they were contradictions of modern tech which was embodied in the whole advance HIFI shit. I mean how could you look at pulsing meters and blinking lights and not thing star wars, but clothed in wood grain...huh?
