I had Thursday/Friday off, making a nice 4 day weekend, and felt like i was starting to relax by Sunday. I actually baked cookies Sunday evening on impulse, something I havent done in years because i just havent the energy. The thought of working today stressed me out so much i woke up at 5am and couldnt fall back asleep, then had a small emotional breakdown while sitting at my desk staring at the number of tickets in my queue. We downsized this year and let everyone else in my position go, leaving only me to do the work of a team of 4....Im so tired....

"We" didn't downsize. Your bosses downsized. Do you see any of them doing the work of 4 people?

I'm not going to add to your load by giving you unrealistic orders to rise up against the unfairness.

But I will say, just do as much as you can without overtaxing yourself and no more. If you got sick, what would happen to those tickets? Does it have to come to that, or is there a way to make it happen while you're still healthy enough to do your fair share of them?

I wonder if you could find a way to phrase it as concern for the company's profits and reputation, and suggest they hire back one person. Even suggest the person you think would be the best help to you, since you'd both still be doing twice the work you were before.

Meanwhile you might start looking for a different company.... And if anyone complains about the tickets piling up, invite them to compare how many you're doing now to how many each person was doing before.

Good luck, kiddo.

tickets in my queue

sounds like you are not working in social services, where you could be guilt tripped into working your ass off so innocent people don't suffer. Just do your work as you've always done and drop the pencil after eight hours or whatever your contract says. It is not your problem if 3/4 of the work is not done. When the customers wait long enough they will make it your bosses problem.

And probably use your spare time to look out for another job, sounds like a company you would rather not work with.

you gotta mix the two. Some "easy pleasure" (hedonism) and some "productive pleasure" (Eudaimonia).

Otherwise you look back on your free time and go "oh my god, I just sat there and did x" instead of "I relaxed and I even got to do XYZ, which was meaningful".

Source : Burnt out, then got sick that all I did was work, the play meaningless rougelikes I already beat, leading to worse depression

It's me, "yeah today i can totally relax" 10 minutes later "why i am still programming?"

"Relaxing from work" usually means "doing housework" for me. 🫩

I disagree that being productive on things I have a passion about is not relaxing or that it defeats the purpose.
