/c/TenForward: Your home-away-from-home for all things Star Trek!

Re-route power to the shields, emit a tachyon pulse through the deflector, and post all the nonsense you want. Within reason of course.

~ 1. No bigotry. This is a Star Trek community. Remember that diversity and coexistence are Star Trek values. Any post/comments that are racist, anti-LGBT, or generally "othering" of a group will result in removal/ban.

~ 2. Keep it civil. Disagreements will happen both on lore and preferences. That's okay! Just don't let it make you forget that the person you are talking to is also a person.

~ 3. Use spoiler tags. Use spoiler tags in comments, and NSFW checkbox for posts.
This applies to any episodes that have dropped within 3 months prior of your posting. After that it's free game.

~ 4. Keep it Trek related. This one is kind of a gimme but keep as on topic as possible.

~ 5. Keep posts to a limit. We all love Star Trek stuff but 3-4 posts in an hour is plenty enough.

~ 6. Try to not repost. Mistakes happen, we get it! But try to not repost anything from within the past 1-2 months.

~ 7. No General AI Art. Posts of simple AI art do not 'inspire jamaharon'

~ 8. No Political Upheaval. Political commentary is allowed, but please keep discussions civil. Read here for our community's expectations.

Fun will now commence.

Listen. Strange women floating in space distributing implants is no basis for a system of government. Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical cosmic ceremony

Wow I don't remember Patsy / Gilliam being a literal frog

[–] aeronmelon@lemmy.world 34 points 2 days ago (2 children)

But they do have a queen. >_>

[–] NullPointerException@lemmy.ca 50 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Unpopular opinion: I didn’t like the whole borg queen story. The idea that they were a decentralized network assimilating others to extract useful things, was much more appealing to me.

[–] data1701d@startrek.website 21 points 2 days ago (1 children)

My thought is the Borg Queen is less actually in control of the collective and more like the voice of the collective, similar to Locutus. She’s also the outlet for every drone’s horniness…

She IS every drone's horniness.

Im with you, I still enjoy that movie though.

How can you tell she's a queen?

Hasn't got any shit on her.

[–] SanctimoniousApe@lemmings.world 3 points 1 day ago (4 children)

Do the Borg actually shit, tho? I'm only a casual Trekkie, but I don't recall them addressing that issue...

(And just to be clear - yes, I know what MP line you're referencing.)

We'll assume the mechanical/nano bits work similar to a stillsuit.

I don't recall anyone having to take one in Star Trek, my head canon is they remove it via transporters at night, like a quick swap when aleeping. As someone with intestinal issues that sounds wonderful.

I haven't seen much of the newer series though and I assume they still urinate to lower energy costs. I may have pondered this a bit.

Now I’m imagining a Borg standing in their alcove just enjoying a burger.

[–] TheDoozer@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

In Voyager, 7-of-9 had to keep going back to her drone recharge/nutrition unit until her digestive system reformed. Basically a whole bunch of Borg equipment replaced basic staying-alive organs.

So if they don't ingest, I'd imagine they don't shit.

Looking at what happens when you link human minds together through the internet, I'm simply amazed at the Borg getting anything done instead of getting hyper-focused on details and completely stuck on decisions because of conflicting thoughts trying to work through different motivations and ideologies.

That's why the need to assimilate. Every original idea that any of them has is shouted down by the rest of the collective before it can even be fully formed, so they need to let other species do their thinking for them and then borgify them.

Think of it like singing. Sing in a big enough group and it doesn’t matter what you sing anymore, the voices of the choir will drown you out.

Given how often they get blown up are we sure they aren't doing that in the background.

OTOH, arguments at the speed of thought, with zero option to not participate, would probably resolve quickly.

For example, how often have you talked yourself into/out of a huff, in the shower? Granted it’s just you, but that internal dialogue is powerful.

Now imagine you aren’t separated from other people and your inner debate is you versus a cacophony, but one central idea rises from the noise and takes on one side of the argument in your head so you aren’t arguing against yourself. It still probably feels like arguing against yourself. And you’ll probably lose because one side of yourself knows a lot more than the other side.

Then assume that thoughts aren’t limited by speaking speed (they might not be for you, but they feel like it if you think in words like many people do. This isn’t an inherent limit to communication because you can process thought faster than a string of words can be strung)

I think the borg could be an even more compelling storytelling vehicle with just a few changes.

  1. Focus on aethetics. Everyone loves pretty people and pretty ships.
  2. Make it voluntary and open. Drop the "resistance is futile" and try some PR for once. No disease, no poverty, no loneliness etc...
[–] Apeman42@lemmy.world 12 points 2 days ago

Yeah, I think a quasi-religious cult offshoot of the borg could be neat to explore.

You just described a plotline of Picard season 2. Wouldn't recommend.

[–] KiwiTB@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Now season 3.... That shit was fire.

[–] ripcord@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

By the inverse property, that fire was shit.

[–] marcos@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Looks like you are trying to describe the Federation...

[–] Thedogdrinkscoffee@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)
[–] marcos@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

Hum... The brain links are way less direct, that's for sure.

Watch Apple TV's new show Plur1bus for an idea along those lines.

Well I didn't know you all were called Dennis.

There's nothing so odd about that. Kemel Attaturk had an entire menagerie called Abdul.

But no right of exit.....

Quite a few counties in the EU are constitutional monarchies.

[–] melroy@kbin.melroy.org 1 points 1 day ago

Well indeed, The Netherlands is one of them. But apart from that, Brussels (EU) seems to claim more and more power like Roberta Metsola and Ursula von der Leyen.. Not sure how, but I didn't vote for them
