There 10 kinds of people in the world. Those who count in binary, and those who dont

That's tertiary to you, pal.

*crying in IPv4 subnet calculations

[–] rockerface@lemmy.cafe 9 points 1 day ago

...and those who didn't expect this joke to be in ternary

[–] floofloof@lemmy.ca 46 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (3 children)

Binary on fingers really comes into its own when you need to order 1023 beers over heavy background noise. Except when there's a mix-up and you end up with -1 beer.

[–] dreadbeef@lemmy.dbzer0.com 11 points 1 day ago

This sounds like xkcd alt text

[–] tomiant@programming.dev 3 points 1 day ago

Jokes on you, I already owed one beer!

It looks like the way to ask for 2 beers would be quite offensive.

[–] melfie@lemy.lol 32 points 1 day ago

Endianness matters quite a lot in this situation

Pretty sure he's ordering 6 in this image.

[–] ironhydroxide@sh.itjust.works 11 points 1 day ago

You mean 7 beers.

[–] madjo@feddit.nl 5 points 1 day ago (2 children)

he's ordering 7, I think, if you count the thumb.

Three logicians walk into a bar. The bartender asks, "Do all of you want a beer?"

"I don't know"

"I don't know"

"Yes"

[–] tomiant@programming.dev 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

"Would you possibly want a beer out of three?"

"Yes."

"There are now only two possible beers left. Would you like to change to another beer?"

"YES!"

These logic problems reminds me of those Ted-ED riddles.

(anyone here watched Ted-ED videos? its not just me being weird right?)

But he just ordered 6. Rookie mistake.

🖕beer please

[–] Toldry@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)
[–] tomiant@programming.dev 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Sir that is more beers than there are particles in the Universe.

[–] yakko@feddit.uk 6 points 1 day ago

Customer is always right

[–] itisileclerk@lemmy.world 14 points 1 day ago

That is actually 5, in Latin.

[–] sem@lemmy.blahaj.zone 10 points 1 day ago (1 children)

An infinite number of mathematicians walk into a bar...

[–] tomiant@programming.dev 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

A quantum mechanic walks into a bar.

He also walks out of the bar.

At the same time.

Glad he picked up another friend. Ordering only two was getting him into a lot of trouble.

[–] 30p87@feddit.org 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Huh, why? Only four would be a Problem. Even worse, 132.

[–] belluck@lemmy.blahaj.zone 9 points 1 day ago (1 children)

In the image he isn’t using his thumb to count, so 2 would be the middle finger.

[–] sem@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Why would you count with only 4 fingers when the hand has 5?

[–] belluck@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 1 day ago

I think it’s because in the UK they start counting (regularly) with the index finger, so the regular binary two would look unnatural in context

Never ask for 2 beers though.

So binary is French? That's legit 3 in French

This could have ended up very badly if were only two beers.

[–] mikezane@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago

He should be sticking out his thumb and index finger. With the index and middle finger up he's showing 6.

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago

It almost works better without the quote

[–] nonentity@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 day ago

There’s a beer in Australia called XXXX.

The joke is it’s for those who can’t spell BEER, but it’s also for those who can’t count, because if they could, it’d be XL.

[–] whelk@retrolemmy.com 4 points 1 day ago

Didn't realize Tommy Lee Jones was bartending these days

[–] TheLeadenSea@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 day ago

Perhaps the bartender is offended since the programmer is giving them the V sign?

[–] solomonschuler@lemmy.zip 3 points 22 hours ago

"Are you dislexic?!"

"No I'm just representing the number three in binary." 😂

[–] dream_weasel@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Could just be European finger counting

[–] ripcord@lemmy.world 12 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Then wouldn't the thumb be out?
